Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training

Silverlake Yoga’s Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training is one of the only in-depth, comprehensive prenatal yoga teacher trainings of its kind. This 85-hour, yoga alliance certified, training contains a curriculum of the highest standards set in the yoga industry alongside the most up-to-date medical science. Students will gain essential knowledge to equip them with an extensive understanding of the prenatal and postpartum experiences, as well the requirements needed to teach safe and effective prenatal yoga classes.

The philosophy of this training is rooted in a mind-body approach to pregnancy, childbirth and parenting preparation with an emphasis on community building and maternal mental health. Topics covered include: Physical and Psychological Benefits of Pre/Postnatal & Baby and Me Yoga, Physiology & Anatomy for all 4 trimesters, Contraindications and Modifications, Maladies and Special Circumstances, Childbirth Education,  Modifications for a Pregnant Student in a Regular Class, Partner Poses, Pelvic Floor in Pregnancy and Postpartum, Sequencing, Props, Chakras, Mantras, Visualizations & Ayurveda, Practice Teaching, Observation and Mentorship.

It is not necessary to be certified by the Yoga Alliance to teach prenatal yoga. The skills and knowledge you will acquire through this training will complement many professions that deal with pregnancy and childbirth. It is an ideal supplemental education if you are a yogi interested in learning about women’s health, a yoga teacher seeking to develop a niche in pre/postnatal yoga, an educator, counselor, midwife, or other healthcare professional interested in expanding their knowledge in reproductive health and women-centered yoga practice. After the completion of this course, you will feel confident accommodating pregnant women in regular classes, as well as be equipped to teach prenatal, couples workshops and postnatal yoga classes.

Students meet in a hybrid in-person/digital format over four non-consecutive weekends, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. sessions on Saturday and Sunday, with a one and a half hour lunch break. The program provides 75 contact hours with lead teachers, as well as expert guest speakers, and requires an additional 10 hours of reading assignments and class observation. Following completion of the certification, trainees have the opportunity to continue their education through mentorships and get in-studio practice teaching and resume building through community classes.

In order to enroll, students do not need to be current yoga teachers or Yoga Alliance certified. However, in order to receive a P-RYT Yoga Alliance certificate, students will need to complete (or have already completed) a Yoga Alliance 200 or 500 hour training. Students must attend all four weekends to receive their certificate.

We will also begin to explore some of the maladies that occur during pregnancy and the adaptations that accompany those symptoms in class. We will begin to break down basic asanas taught in a pregnancy class including standing poses, twists and forward folds. We will begin to address the important function and attention taken to the pelvic floor, the psoas muscles and the sciatic nerve. Each weekend we will be observing a prenatal class either on Sat. or Sun., accompanied by a discussion and then our own practicum and asana practice, informing how we design our own prenatal classes. There will be a speaker attending each weekend; a perinatal chiropractor, an OB perinatologist, a Midwife or a Nurse Midwife, Acupuncturist and Doula. Reading assignments will be assigned.

Module 3: Childbirth education for Prenatal Instructors, cultural difference on birth, comfort measures for birth, Philosophy and the Subtle body including the Yamas and Niyamas and how they relate to the prenatal period. We will introduce partnering poses in this module.  A discussion of incorporating Pranayama into class. More maladies and complications discussed, supine hypotension, sequencing according to the third trimester and including first and second trimester sequencing and adaptations for classes of all trimesters. This module will also include sample classes taught by the instructors for various levels. Turning in the homework as well as reviewing Yoga Alliance certification requirements.

Module 2: An extensive discussion breaking down the anatomy of the pelvic floor and its many layers. We will begin exploring Mula Banda and its relationship (or not) to engaging the pelvic floor. There will be a second set of maladies during pregnancy discussed and what adaptations can be suggested. We will also discuss contraindications to Prenatal Yoga as well as high risk pregnancy, sequencing during the second trimester, squats, prenatal vinyasa sequencing, Inversions, backbends and restorative postures during pregnancy. We will also address prenatal yoga without props and adjustments and options for pregnant folks who are dealing with a condition or have never done yoga before. Sequencing for the second trimester will be practiced. Reading and homework will be assigned.

Module 4: In this module we introduce the Postnatal Period or “matrescence” and the efficacy around creating community with parents and their newborns. Lead Teachers

  • Juliette Kurth

Juliette, co-owner of Silverlake Yoga, is a Yoga Alliance certified teacher who has been teaching yoga for over 30 years. During her first pregnancy, she discovered that there were very few yoga studios offering prenatal and postnatal yoga classes, so she decided to immerse herself in the discipline, studying with Rocky Graham at Yoga Works, Elizabeth Noble who founded the Womans’ Health Section of the American Physical Therapist’s Association, as well as the Naropa Institute in Colorado which offered their very first Prenatal Teacher Training Program in 1994.

After her first child, Juliette began teaching prenatal yoga classes at Silverlake Yoga, eventually offering a 7 day intensive pre and post natal training for other teachers, one of the first trainings’ to be certified by Yoga Alliance. She also became a DONA certified Birth and Postpartum Doula, attending over 200 births between 1997 and 2018.

It was during her time as a doula that she became interested in helping women with postpartum depression and anxiety. She returned to school and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from USC with a concentration in Maternal Mental Health.

Juliette is passionate about demystifying the bad rap mothers often feel for not being perfect and feels that the best resource for new moms struggling with mental health issues is community with other mothers.

In her prenatal classes, Vera focuses on addressing both physical and mental health challenges during pregnancy, labor, and recovery. She encourages women to explore and trust their bodies while balancing strength-building with relaxation.

  • Emily Carden

After many years of personal practice, Emily was trained first as a yogi through a Yoga & Ayurveda program with Dancing Shiva Yoga & Ayurveda in 2011. Shortly thereafter, she was more formally trained to teach the practice at YogaWorks. She taught a variety of class styles including hatha yoga, restorative, vinyasa flow and eventually found her niche in prenatal yoga. She has since completed her 500 E-RYT (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher) and her P-RYT (Prenatal Registered Yoga Teacher), meanwhile becoming a certified birth and postpartum doula through DONA in 2014.

Emily completed her P-RYT through Silverlake Yoga in 2013 and hasn't looked back. She spent many years as a very active birth and postpartum doula alongside her prenatal yoga teaching schedule in Los Angeles. In 2019 Emily gave birth to her first child at home before relocating to Phoenix, AZ. In 2021, her second son arrived. With two littles at home her primary focus shifted to teaching childbirth education classes as a Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator or private prenatal yoga instruction. Emily's unique background and extensive experience is also passed along through her role as prenatal yoga teacher trainer.
